Fossils

The fossil mammals in this formation were identified by Miao Desui (1982) to include Pygmaetian panxianensis, Qianohippus magicus, Lophiomeryx shinaoensis and L. gracilis.

Age

From the faunal assemblage, the age of perissodactyles is neither older than Middle Eocene nor younger than Late Eocene, while Lophiomeryx has not been found yet in pre-Late Eocene strata; therefore, Miao Desui thought that the age of the Shinao Formation is probably Late Eocene.
